Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday shared an ambitious vision to transform the Nagpur region into a global business destination, announcing plans for “New Nagpur” — a dedicated Global Capability Centre (GCC) hub expected to generate nearly five lakh jobs in the coming years.
Speaking at a public interaction programme titled “Tarri Poha with Devabhau”, moderated by comedian Bharat Ganeshpure and actor Spruha Joshi, Fadnavis said Maharashtra is preparing to attract the next wave of global investments as multinational companies increasingly establish GCCs in India. He noted that these centres focus on high-end functions such as research, innovation and advanced services, rather than traditional IT work. “To attract such investments, we need entirely new business districts with iconic, future-ready infrastructure,” he said.
The proposed New Nagpur project will be developed over around 700 hectares near the Samruddhi Expressway and is envisioned as a self-contained business district with walk-to-work facilities. Fadnavis said the state has already received enquiries from international developers interested in the project. A new outer ring road connecting the upcoming district is also planned, with a combined government investment of over ₹11,000 crore in the ring road and New Nagpur development.
Highlighting Nagpur’s historical importance, the Chief Minister said the renewed focus on the city and the Vidarbha region aims to correct decades of developmental imbalance. He recalled that Nagpur, once the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar, gave up that status to become part of a united Maharashtra. Today, he said, Nagpur has emerged as the state’s third major metropolitan city after Mumbai and Pune, while retaining its distinct cultural identity.
Fadnavis described Nagpur as a “city of models,” where several innovative initiatives were first implemented before being replicated elsewhere in the country. He cited infrastructure projects led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, including double-decker flyovers and integrated road-and-metro corridors, which have since become benchmarks for other cities.
The Chief Minister also outlined several civic and sustainability-driven projects underway in Nagpur. These include power generation using treated sewage water, a 24×7 water supply scheme that has reduced water scarcity, an extensive network of cement roads and flyovers, and an upcoming waste-to-biogas project. He said the Nagpur Municipal Corporation will soon launch a facility that converts 100% of municipal waste into biogas, enabling city buses to run on CNG without tipping fees. The project is expected to be commissioned within the next two to three months.
Reflecting on his political journey, Fadnavis said patience has been his most important lesson in public life, adding that Nagpur’s growth story reflects a balance between rapid development and the preservation of its social fabric.
