With an eye on the upcoming Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday released its manifesto, presenting an ambitious roadmap for the city’s development.
The party said that by continuing the development initiatives launched in 2014, Nagpur would be transformed into one of the country’s model metropolitan cities.
Through the manifesto, the BJP assured citizens of transparent governance and promised to make Nagpur a clean, smart and developed city by implementing several welfare-oriented schemes. The manifesto was released in the presence of Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, MLA Pravin Datke, city BJP president Dayashankar Tiwari, MLC Parinay Fuke, former MLAs Sudhakar Kohale and Milind Mane, former MLC Anil Sole, state vice-president Girish Vyas, Sanjay Bhende, Jaiprakash Gupta, Vishnu Changde and other senior leaders.Key assurances include exemption from property tax for houses with a built-up area of up to 500 square feet, for which a proposal has already been sent to the state government.
The party also announced plans to introduce sky buses on the lines of the Metro and to make Nagpur a lease-free city. E-libraries will be set up in all six Assembly constituencies, while convention centres for youth will be developed. Markets will also have reserved facilities for persons with disabilities.Major infrastructure projects proposed in the manifesto include a new flyover from Tukdoji Square to Besa, a commercial complex near the Harihar Temple in the Itwari area, completion of the incomplete Shankar Nagar building to create a women’s haat, a flyover from the Gittikhadan police outpost to Katol Naka Square, and the construction of 10 new police stations.
Addressing civic concerns, the BJP termed the growing problem of stray dogs and wandering cattle as serious and assured citizens that effective measures would be taken to tackle the issue.
The party further stated that if elected to power, the mayor would hold regular ‘janata darbars’ in each Assembly constituency to promptly address and resolve citizens’ grievances in the presence of concerned officials.
