What should be a quick five-minute drop-off at Nagpur Railway Station is increasingly turning into a long and stressful experience for commuters. Many have complained about traffic jams, overcharging and alleged harassment at the car-to-coach parking area near Platform No. 8.
In a complaint to senior Central Railway officials, a commuter said vehicles were stuck inside the parking area for nearly 90 minutes due to heavy congestion at the exit gate. The problem was blamed on poor traffic management and mismanagement by the private contractor running the pay-and-park facility. Commuters say such situations are common during peak hours, festival seasons and when premium trains depart.
Motorists entering the parking area within the free or minimum parking time often find themselves delayed because of staff shortages and unplanned vehicle movement. As delays increase, parking staff allegedly demand extra charges, even when the congestion is not the commuter’s fault. Several passengers have claimed that objections are met with rude behaviour and that exit barriers are kept closed until payment is made.
Railway probe, penalty imposed
After receiving the complaint on December 31, the Commercial Branch of Nagpur Division conducted an inquiry. In an official communication dated January 9, 2026, the Divisional Railway Manager’s office confirmed that the issue was examined and a penalty was imposed on the contractor based on inspection findings. The contractor has also been instructed to ensure smooth, orderly and efficient parking operations to prevent such incidents in future.
A recurring issue
Regular station users say the problem has continued for months, even years, despite repeated complaints. “The traffic pattern is predictable, yet nothing changes. Commuters always end up suffering,” said a frequent rail traveller.
The complainant reported financial loss due to forced payments and fuel wastage, along with mental stress caused by long delays and alleged aggressive behaviour by staff. The incident has once again raised concerns about railway oversight, enforcement of contract terms and the lack of an effective grievance redressal system on the ground. With passenger numbers rising, commuters warn that unless strict monitoring continues, poor management at station parking areas may become the norm rather than an exception.
