With the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections set for January 15, enforcement agencies have stepped up vigilance across the city to curb illegal activities that could influence voters. As part of this intensified drive, the Crime Branch Chain Snatching Squad on Wednesday carried out a major operation in the Jaripatka area, seizing illicit liquor worth ₹1.22 lakh, an action that sent ripples through the city’s political and administrative circles.
The operation was conducted within the limits of Jaripatka Police Station, where Crime No. 27/2026 has been registered under Section 65(e) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. Police arrested Vikas Babulal Dahat (43), a resident of Indira Nagar, Jaripatka, while another accused, Anil Khare (42), is currently absconding.
During the raid, police recovered a substantial quantity of illegally stocked liquor, including 585 bottles of country liquor ‘Santri’ (90 ml) valued at ₹23,400, 605 bottles of country liquor ‘Bhingri Santra No.1’ (90 ml) worth ₹24,200, and 69 bottles of Imperial Blue whisky (180 ml) valued at ₹15,180. Police also seized an Activa scooter (MH 49 X 2527) worth ₹60,000, believed to have been used for transporting the liquor.
The total value of the seized liquor and vehicle amounts to ₹1,22,780. Police officials stated that the accused was found in possession of the liquor without any valid licence and was apprehended on the spot.
The arrested accused, along with the seized material, has been handed over to Jaripatka Police Station for further investigation. Police said similar operations will continue across Nagpur in the run-up to polling day to prevent illegal liquor distribution and voter inducement, ensuring a free, fair, and transparent NMC election process.
