With just a day left for polling in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, the city has turned into a hub of intense political activity, as candidates across party lines make final attempts to woo voters. From conventional rallies and door-to-door visits to unconventional outreach such as biryani feasts and mushairas, aspirants are deploying every possible strategy to gain an edge in what is expected to be a tightly fought civic battle.
Realising the importance of personal connect at the grassroots level, several local candidates have shifted focus from large public meetings to smaller, community-driven engagements. Over the weekend, select pockets of the city witnessed discreet dinner gatherings, distribution of food items and cultural programmes aimed at strengthening voter rapport. These efforts, while informal, are widely regarded as part of the unwritten traditions that resurface during the final phase of electioneering.
Senior leaders of major political parties continue to campaign aggressively, addressing public meetings and highlighting promises related to infrastructure development, improved civic amenities and efficient urban governance. At the same time, ward-level aspirants are concentrating on direct voter interaction, ensuring their supporters feel valued in the crucial hours leading up to polling day.
The electoral contest for 151 prabhags of the NMC will be decided on January 15, when citizens head to polling booths to exercise their franchise. The counting of votes is scheduled for January 16, following which the composition of the next civic body governing Nagpur will be known.
Adding to the charged atmosphere is the buzz in the city’s informal ‘satta bazaar’, where speculation over the likely winner has intensified. Sources indicate that punters are actively placing bets, with talk of a single party possibly securing a clear majority. Though unofficial and outside the democratic framework, such trends are often seen as a reflection of public mood ahead of crucial elections.
As campaigning enters its final stretch, candidates are making last-minute appeals, voters are weighing competing claims, and the city awaits a decisive mandate. Whether development promises, past performance or personal outreach will influence the final verdict will be revealed once the ballots are counted.
