Scenes of celebration erupted across Nagpur as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding victory in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections. Gulal-filled air, garlands, sweets and loud chants by party workers marked the BJP’s fourth consecutive capture of the civic body. For the second straight term, the party crossed the coveted century mark in seats, underlining its continued dominance in city politics.
The win coincided with the launch of the centenary year of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Vijayadashami, lending symbolic significance to the outcome. Though the BJP’s seat tally declined marginally from its 2017 performance, the party’s return to power was widely seen as a “century salute” to the Sangh’s 100th year.
The BJP fought the civic polls under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Organisational responsibilities were handled by MLA Pravin Datke, city BJP president Dayashankar Tiwari and state vice-president Sanjay Bhende.
Campaigning with the slogan “Mission 120,” the BJP eventually won 102 seats, while ally Shiv Sena secured one. This was slightly lower than the BJP’s 108-seat tally in 2017, but sufficient for a comfortable majority. Discussions have now begun within the party on the selection of the next mayor.
The Indian National Congress improved its performance to 34 seats, up from 29 in 2017, but failed to meet its ambitious projections. The Bahujan Samaj Party saw its presence shrink sharply, while AIMIM and the Muslim League emerged as key gainers, signalling changing political dynamics in parts of the city.
