The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been under administrative rule for the past four years, during which vehicles earmarked for the mayor and other elected office-bearers were utilised for official and administrative purposes.
With the installation of a new mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairperson, ruling party leader, opposition leader and other representatives, the NMC administration now faces the task of arranging vehicles for them.
As per the prevailing government norms, the NMC is authorised to procure a four-wheeler costing up to ₹30 lakh for the mayor.
Similar provisions apply to the deputy mayor, standing committee chairperson, ruling party leader, opposition leader and the chairperson of the weaker sections committee.
In addition, zonal chairpersons and heads of advisory committees are also entitled to official vehicles, further increasing the demand. In this context, on January 21, 2026, the deputy commissioner (general administration) instructed the executive engineer (workshop) to submit a proposal outlining vehicle arrangements for elected representatives.
The proposal will explore various options, including reclaiming vehicles currently assigned to officials, hiring vehicles on a monthly rental basis, or purchasing new four-wheelers.
Administrative rule has been in effect in the NMC since March 4, 2022, during which there were no elected representatives.
As a result, vehicles reserved for posts such as mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairperson, ruling party leader and opposition leader remained unused for their designated roles. Rather than leaving them idle, the administration reassigned these vehicles to senior officials and various departments.
Of the seven vehicles originally designated for office-bearers, one — a 2011 model Honda City (MH 31/CE-0001) — was declared unfit and sent for scrapping.
The remaining six vehicles are currently being used by the Smart City CEO, the additional municipal commissioner, deputy commissioners, the chief accounts and finance officer, and officials from the cleanliness and health departments.
