The historic Sitabuldi Fort was opened to the public on the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, drawing a record crowd of nearly 37,000 visitors in a single day.
The special public access allowed citizens to explore one of Central India’s most prominent military heritage sites. The fort was previously opened to the public on August 15, 2025, when around 28,000 people visited the landmark.

Extensive security and traffic arrangements were made to ensure smooth movement of visitors. Personnel from the Indian Army, Nagpur Police, and Traffic Police were deployed in large numbers, reflecting strong coordination between military and civil authorities. Visitors appreciated the Army’s hospitality and the well-organized management of the event.
Historical Significance of Sitabuldi Fort
Sitabuldi Fort was built in 1817 soon after the historic Battle of Sitabuldi, a decisive episode in the Third Anglo-Maratha War that contributed to the decline of the Maratha Empire. Situated on twin hillocks in the heart of Nagpur, the fort has witnessed major phases of India’s military and colonial past.
Today, the fort stands as a symbol of the Marathas’ resistance against colonial forces and their final struggle for sovereignty. It currently serves as the headquarters of the Uttar Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area, which oversees military establishments in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Key Attractions Inside the Fort
The fort complex houses several historically important structures and artifacts, including:
• Heritage military barracks
• Vintage cannons
• War memorials
• A cell where Mahatma Gandhi was briefly detained during the freedom movement
Visitors also enjoyed sweeping views of prominent city landmarks such as Zero Mile, Civil Lines, Freedom Park, and central Nagpur from the elevated location of the fort.
The Republic Day opening once again highlighted the fort’s historical importance and promoted greater public awareness of India’s military heritage.
