The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan to modernise Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under the PM SETU scheme to improve skill training and create better employment opportunities. Nagpur ITI has been included in the first phase of the project.
In the initial phase, the scheme will be implemented in ITIs across three districts, with plans to expand it to more districts in the next phase. The programme aims to upgrade training facilities and make job placements easier for students.
The initiative was led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has been working on the proposal for a long time. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the project will follow a hub-and-spoke model and will be implemented in phases starting next year to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of skilled manpower.
The Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme, launched on October 4, 2025, aims to modernise 1,000 government ITIs across the country.
The project will be funded in a 50:33:17 ratio, with contributions from the Centre, the Maharashtra government, and industry partners respectively.
