In a significant anti-drug operation conducted ahead of Valentine’s Day, the Crime Branch’s Anti-Narcotics Cell busted an alleged drug distribution attempt and seized Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MD) powder worth over ₹1 crore within the limits of Ganeshpeth Police Station late on February 13.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Anti-Narcotics team was patrolling the Ganeshpeth area at around 11.10 pm when they received reliable information that MD was being sold near Abhyankar Bhavan on Subhash Road at Rajaram Devi Chowk. Based on the tip-off, officers swiftly laid a trap and detained a suspect who arrived at the spot on a moped.
The detained individual identified himself as Sanjay Ramprasad Gangwani (51), a resident of Ganeshpeth, Nagpur. During a search carried out in the presence of independent witnesses, police recovered 512 grams of MD powder from the vehicle’s dickey. The contraband is estimated to be valued at approximately ₹1,02,40,000 in the illegal market.
Indore-Based Supplier Under Scanner
During interrogation, the accused allegedly disclosed that the drug consignment had been sent by a wanted associate based in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, through a private travel agency courier service for further distribution in Nagpur.
In addition to the narcotics, police seized three mobile phones, a helmet, and ₹41,000 in cash from his possession. The total value of the confiscated material stands at ₹1,03,82,000.
Officials stated that the accused was found in possession of the banned substance with the intention of selling it for monetary gain.
Case Registered Under NDPS Act
A case has been registered under Sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the NDPS Act at Ganeshpeth Police Station. The accused has been arrested and remanded to police custody. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the absconding supplier from Indore, and further investigation into the broader supply network is ongoing.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Abhijit Patil.
The raid was executed by Police Inspector Gajanan Gulhane and his Anti-Narcotics team from the Crime Branch.
