The Metropolitan Surveillance Unit (MSU), operating under the Health Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, has stepped in to investigate a Hepatitis A outbreak in the New Mankapur area.
Since the last week of January, residents of Nikhare Layout in New Mankapur have been reporting symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, jaundice, high fever, abdominal pain and weakness. As the number of cases rose, the civic body was alerted and immediate action was taken.A Rapid Response Team (RRT) was deployed to the locality to conduct door-to-door surveys and collect samples. During the investigation, around five residents were confirmed to be infected with Hepatitis A, while several others had been experiencing symptoms for nearly a month.
Preliminary findings suggest that contaminated drinking water could be the main cause of the outbreak. It is suspected that recent pipeline work carried out by Orange City Water (OCW) may have led to leakage in some pipes, allowing contamination. Water samples have been collected and sent to a laboratory for testing.
Health Department teams are actively engaging with residents, distributing medicines and ORS packets, and advising people to boil drinking water and use chlorine before consumption. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further spread of the infection.
