A turf war has erupted between the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) over the proposed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) on the Inner Ring Road stretch, leaving commuters in limbo.
NMC is pushing to operate electric articulated (trolley) buses on the corridor, while Maha Metro has proposed a metro rail line from Mankapur Square to Rachana Ring Road Junction on Hingna Road via Prajapati Nagar and Chhatrapati Square under Phase III. The civic body has sought route details from Metro, but officials say the information is already part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), prepared in consultation with NMC and available publicly.
The CMP estimates peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) of 9,700 passengers by 2031 on the Mankapur–Rachana Ring Road corridor, qualifying it as a strong candidate for a metro line. However, sources said NMC approved articulated buses on the Inner Ring Road without conducting a traffic survey.
Notably, while backing buses on this key stretch, NMC has yet to act on medium-cost MRTS routes identified under CMP 2025, including Agrasen Square–Dighori Square and Wadi–Sitabuldi corridors, raising concerns over fragmented transport planning in the city.
