The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated former Nagpur mayor Maya Chintaman Ivnate as one of its candidates for the upcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra, according to an official statement issued by the party’s central office in New Delhi. The party’s central election committee approved four names for the Maharashtra seats — Ramdas Athawale, Vinod Tawde, Maya Chintaman Inavate, and Ramrao Wadkute — for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections scheduled in 2026. The announcement was made through a formal communication signed by the party’s national leadership.Ivnate nomination has drawn particular attention in Nagpur’s political circles as she will become the first former mayor from the city to enter the Rajya Sabha, marking a significant milestone for the region’s municipal leadership. A long-time BJP functionary, Inavate has been associated with grassroots politics in Nagpur for several years and is known for her organisational work within the party. She earlier served as mayor of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and was elected as a corporator from the Hajaripahad area of the city. In the 2017 civic polls, she won the corporator election from Ward 12 representing the BJP with over 13,000 votes, reflecting her strong local support base. Party leaders said the nomination recognises her experience in urban governance and long association with the party’s organisation in the Vidarbha region. With her elevation to the Upper House, BJP leaders in Nagpur believe the city will gain stronger representation in national parliamentary discussions. The Rajya Sabha elections for Maharashtra are expected later this year as part of the biennial cycle of vacancies in the Upper House.
