A dowry harassment case has been registered at the Jaripatka Police Station after a 26-year-old woman alleged that her fiancé and his family demanded a resort wedding or ₹3 lakh in cash, failing which the marriage would be cancelled.
The complainant, Shivani Vasudev Bombarde (26), originally from Amgaon in Gondia district and currently residing in Jaripatka, stated that her marriage had been arranged with Umesh Nilkanth Deshbhratar (32), a resident of Charde Layout, Kondhali on Wardha Road. A formal engagement ceremony had already been conducted.
Between February 22 and February 27, 2026, the accused allegedly called the complainant and insisted that the wedding must be held at a resort. He reportedly told her that if the ceremony was not organised at a resort, she would have to pay ₹3 lakh in cash, otherwise the marriage would not take place.
Police said the groom’s mother, Niranjana Nilkanth Deshbhratar (52), and relative Harshal Nilkanth Deshbhratar (28) also allegedly joined in the demand, pressuring the complainant for ₹3 lakh as dowry. When she refused to meet the demand, the accused allegedly called off the marriage, causing her mental harassment.
Following her complaint, police registered a case under Sections 4 and 6 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Further investigation is in progress.
