A young student from Nagpur was among three IIT Bombay students who died in a tragic road accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Panvel on Thursday morning. The incident occurred as the group was returning from Khandala after an early morning outing.
The deceased have been identified as Shreyansh Sharma (22) from Jaipur, Omkumar Borse (23) from Nashik, and Lay Deshbhratar (20) from Nagpur. All three were pursuing undergraduate engineering courses at IIT Bombay.
Police said the accident took place around 9 am near the Panvel exit when the SUV attempted to overtake a truck. Unable to change lanes, the driver tried to pass from the service road. During the attempt, the vehicle got wedged between the truck and the road edge, overturned multiple times, and caused fatal injuries to the occupants.
The students were travelling in a group using multiple vehicles. They had reportedly left early in the morning for Khandala to watch the sunrise after stepping out the previous night.
All three victims were taken to a hospital in Panvel, where they were declared dead. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
The deceased were from different engineering streams, with Sharma studying mechanical engineering, while Borse and Deshbhratar were enrolled in aerospace and physics courses, respectively. Authorities have handed over the bodies to their families.
The fatal crash has raised fresh concerns over safety on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, while leaving families and the academic community in deep shock, including in Nagpur.
