A severe shortage of LPG cylinders in the city has left many households struggling to meet their daily cooking needs. With supply failing to keep pace with rising demand, residents are now urging the government to restart kerosene distribution in urban areas as an immediate relief measure.
The disruption in global supply chains, particularly due to ongoing tensions in Gulf countries, has led to a sharp decline in the availability of cooking gas. Local distributors have admitted their inability to fulfill demand, resulting in widespread inconvenience. This shortage has also fueled a thriving black market, where LPG cylinders are being sold at inflated prices ranging from ?2,600 to ?2,800, far above the usual ?1,000, making them unaffordable for many low-income families.
For several households, the crisis has turned into a daily challenge, with basic cooking becoming increasingly difficult. While kerosene is still distributed in rural areas through the public distribution system, urban residents are left with limited or no alternatives. Unlike villages where firewood may be accessible, city dwellers lack such options and cannot easily switch to other fuels.
The situation has also brought attention to alleged irregularities in the public distribution system.
