The Nagpur City Police has launched an investigation into an alleged financial fraud of nearly Rs50 lakh, following complaints received by its Economic Offences Wing involving the targeting of rural women.
Thousands of Women Allegedly Misled with Business Schemes
As per preliminary complaints, Pawan Wankhede, associated with Gaon Maza Udyog Foundation, is accused of deceiving thousands of women by offering attractive schemes aimed at promoting rural entrepreneurship.
The promises allegedly included:
• Assistance in starting small businesses
• Access to government-subsidized loans
• Allotment of land for setting up industries
• Assured ownership and employment opportunities
Investigators say that around 5,000 women were enrolled into the scheme, each paying a membership fee of ₹1,000, resulting in a total collection of approximately Rs50 lakh.
Economic Offences Wing Begins Inquiry
The Economic Offences Wing has initiated a detailed probe into the allegations to determine the scale and authenticity of the claims. Officials are currently reviewing documents and statements submitted by the complainants.
Police Appeal for More Victims to Come Forward
Authorities have appealed to citizens—particularly women from rural areas—who may have been similarly misled to report the matter. Victims are encouraged to approach the Economic Offences Wing in Nagpur with supporting documents.
Police have also advised affected individuals to directly contact the investigating officer, PSI Sushil Dhokte, as the inquiry progresses.
