In view of the rising summer temperatures, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated measures to provide relief to the homeless by setting up temporary shelter facilities across the city. With temperatures expected to cross 40 degrees Celsius in the coming weeks, the Social Welfare Department has activated multiple night shelters and relief centres to ensure that vulnerable citizens are protected from extreme heat conditions.
According to the civic administration, a total of seven shelter centres have been made operational at key locations including Gittikhadan, Indora, Sitabuldi, Dharampeth and other areas. These facilities collectively have a capacity to accommodate around 450 people. Basic amenities such as drinking water, fans, bedding, and sanitation facilities are being provided to ensure a safe and comfortable stay.
Officials stated that the initiative is being implemented under the guidance of senior civic authorities, with a focus on ensuring that no person is left exposed to harsh weather conditions. Contact numbers have also been issued for each shelter to enable easy access and assistance.
The NMC has appealed to citizens to inform authorities if they come across any homeless individuals in need of shelter, so that timely help can be provided. The administration reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives of the urban poor and minimizing heat-related risks during the peak summer season.
