A 45-year-old man died in a tragic accident at the Riddhapur railway overbridge construction site on Wednesday after a heavy iron plate, weighing nearly 100 kg, allegedly fell on his head while he was passing underneath the structure.
The deceased has been identified as Ishwar Bhurbhure, a resident of Riddhapur.
The bridge, which has been under construction for the past three years, is currently in its final phase, sources said.
According to reports, Bhurbhure was riding pillion on a motorcycle and carrying a gas cylinder while travelling towards Chandur Bazar. As they were passing beneath the bridge during ongoing concreting work, a heavy iron plate reportedly fell from above and struck him on the head.
He suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Chandur Bazar Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety measures at the construction site. As per Indian Railways guidelines, construction activities at elevated sites like railway bridges must follow strict safety protocols, including mandatory use of helmets, installation of safety nets to prevent falling debris, and proper caution signage.
However, eyewitnesses and local residents alleged that such precautions were not in place at the site. Residents of nearby Dabheri village had reportedly warned the supervisor multiple times about safety risks, but their concerns were ignored.
Following the incident, residents gathered at the hospital demanding action against those responsible. Police officials, including Inspector Ishwar Varge and Vaibhav Ghogre, visited the spot and conducted a panchnama. Further investigation is underway.
