The Maharashtra government has approved a grant of ₹70 crore for the strengthening and protection works of Ambazari Lake and the Nag River, providing major relief to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The official communication in this regard was received on March 31, confirming long-pending financial support for the project.
The proposal was initiated following repeated flooding incidents in recent years, including the September 2023 deluge, which caused significant damage in low-lying areas. As per NDRF norms, immediate assistance was required, prompting NMC to submit a proposal to the state government for lake and river bank reinforcement.
The project includes concrete strengthening of the old Ambazari dam wall, repair of earthen embankments, stone pitching, and installation of drainage systems. An estimated ₹21.07 crore will be spent on dam safety works, while around ₹12.35 crore has been earmarked for embankment repairs and related infrastructure.
Additionally, plans include widening and deepening nearly 5 km of the Nag River up to 1 meter to improve water flow and reduce flood risks. The initiative is also expected to enhance the lake’s water-holding capacity and prevent future urban flooding.
Officials stated that the approved funds will also be used to clear pending contractor dues, which had delayed work progress. The grant, sanctioned towards the end of the 2025–26 financial year, will be disbursed through the district administration to NMC.
Authorities emphasized that the project will not only ensure structural safety of Ambazari Lake but also help mitigate flood threats in surrounding areas, offering long-term relief to Nagpur residents.
