In a twin-purpose initiative aimed at tackling rising heat and promoting renewable energy, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is planning to install solar rooftop sheds at major traffic signals across the city. The proposal seeks to provide much-needed shade to commuters—especially two-wheeler riders—who are forced to endure extreme heat while waiting at signals during peak summer months.
Under the plan, these structures will be fitted with solar panels, enabling electricity generation alongside offering protection from direct sunlight. Civic officials believe the move will not only improve commuter comfort but also contribute to clean energy production, reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
The initiative builds on earlier efforts by the NMC, such as installing green nets at intersections to provide temporary relief from heat. However, the proposed solar sheds are being seen as a more durable and sustainable solution.
The project is expected to be implemented at busy and high-traffic junctions where long signal waiting times expose commuters to harsh weather conditions. Officials are currently working on planning and execution details, including design, cost and feasibility.
If implemented effectively, the initiative could serve as a model for combining urban infrastructure with renewable energy solutions while addressing climate-related challenges in cities like Nagpur.
