A 42-year-old State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawan was allegedly killed by his daughter’s boyfriend and his associates in Nagpur, officials said on Friday, with five people taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Pankaj Thakur was attacked in the Matoshree Nagar area, under the MIDC police jurisdiction.
His brother-in-law, 30-year-old Arpit, sustained serious injuries during the assault, police reported.
According to authorities, the main accused, 23-year-old Akash Haridas Mandal, had been in a relationship with Thakur’s 16-year-old daughter for the past two years. Thakur had repeatedly warned Mandal to stay away from the minor.
The confrontation occurred during a Hanuman Jayanti event at a local temple on Thursday night. Mandal reportedly approached the girl, prompting Thakur to intervene, which led to an argument. The accused then returned home, armed with a knife, along with relatives and friends, and attacked Thakur.
Arpit was also assaulted while trying to protect Thakur. Both were rushed to Shalinitai Meghe Hospital, where Thakur was pronounced dead.
Police confirmed that Mandal, his brother Harshad, their mother, and two others have been arrested. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
