Nagpur Municipal Corporation has approached police seeking registration of an FIR against 10 school staff members for allegedly refusing to perform duties assigned under the ongoing Census 2026–27 exercise.
In a letter dated April 6, the assistant commissioner of Satranjipura zone urged the senior inspector of Yashodhara Nagar Police Station to initiate legal action. The communication cites provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and directives from the Union home ministry, which mandate participation in census-related work for designated personnel.
According to officials, the staff—comprising a principal, teachers and administrative employees—were appointed as enumerators and supervisors but allegedly failed to report for duty despite repeated instructions. The civic body has termed this a violation of lawful orders, invoking Section 187 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which deals with disobedience.
The NMC has authorised a junior engineer from the zone to follow up on the complaint and coordinate with police. Officials said similar issues have been reported across all 10 zones, with several enumerators and supervisors yet to join duty.
Authorities added that multiple schools, colleges, and government, semi-government and unaided institutions have either not relieved staff or refused to accept appointment orders. Taking serious note, the municipal commissioner has directed assistant commissioners across zones to initiate action against non-compliant institutions.
Police officials have not yet confirmed whether an FIR has been registered.
