In a major boost to the city’s growing prominence as an education and healthcare hub, the Government of Maharashtra has approved the establishment of the Indian Institute of Public Health in Nagpur. The institute will be developed in collaboration with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi.
The decision, issued through a Government Resolution by the State Public Health Department, is aimed at strengthening public health research, training, and institutional capacity across Maharashtra.
Dedicated public health institute
The proposed institute will serve as a state-level centre of excellence focused on public health education, advanced research, capacity building, and technical support to the healthcare system.
According to the resolution, improving public health outcomes requires coordinated efforts in healthcare delivery, disease prevention, health promotion, and administrative management. With rising challenges such as non-communicable diseases, evolving health needs, and the goal of universal health coverage, the state requires skilled human resources and strong research institutions.
The institute will address these requirements by providing specialised training to health department officers and staff, along with supporting research and policy planning in public health.
Roles and objectives
The institute will focus on key areas including public health education and professional training, research on health systems and disease trends, capacity building for health officials, and technical support for policy formulation and programme implementation.
It will also assist the state government in monitoring, evaluation, and execution of public health programmes.
Rs 170 crore funding approved
To set up the institute, the state government has sanctioned Rs 170 crore, which includes Rs 120 crore as a capital grant for infrastructure development and Rs 50 crore as a corpus fund for operational purposes.
For the project, 5.1 acres of non-agricultural land at Mouza MIHAN, Post Khapri in Nagpur district has been allocated to the Public Health Department at a nominal rate of Rs 1.
Non-profit structure
The institute will be established as a Section 8 company under the Companies Act, ensuring it functions as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to public health education and research.
Officials said the institute is expected to significantly strengthen Maharashtra’s public health infrastructure while positioning Nagpur as a major centre for public health research and training in central India.
