In a significant boost to Maharashtra’s power sector, coal production has commenced at the Gare-Palma coal mine in Chhattisgarh, with the first coal rake successfully dispatched to the Koradi Thermal Power Station. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared this update during a review meeting held in Nagpur.
The Chief Minister stated that the decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allocate captive coal mines to power generation companies has proven to be a landmark step. As a result, Maharashtra’s Mahagenco secured the Gare-Palma coal block. After obtaining environmental clearances and overcoming multiple regulatory hurdles, coal extraction has now begun at the site.
Highlighting the benefits, Fadnavis said the development will significantly reduce the state’s dependence on external coal sources. The coal from this mine is of superior quality, with a Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of around 4300, enabling higher efficiency in power generation with lesser quantity. This is expected to lower the cost of electricity production, ultimately providing relief to consumers while also minimizing environmental impact.
In addition, the Chief Minister noted that coal gasification projects are gaining momentum in the state. Out of seven such projects across the country, three are being implemented in Maharashtra. Based on the experience from these projects, similar initiatives may be planned in other regions in the future.
