The Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR) is set to boost eco-tourism by opening four new jungle safari gates—Pangdi, Jambhdi, Murdoli and Gadegaon Depot—from May.
Located across Gondia and Bhandara districts, NNTR is India’s 46th tiger reserve, spread over 1,894.90 sq km, including 656.36 sq km core area and 1,241.24 sq km buffer zone. All four new gates are in the buffer region and aim to reduce long waiting queues for safari entry. At present, the reserve has eight gates—Pitezari, Chorkhamara, Mangezari, Baki, Kholi, Jambhali, Pitambartola and Umarzari.
The addition of new gates is expected to improve tourist flow and enhance the safari experience. Around 10 safari vehicles will be allowed through these new entry points, helping ease pressure on existing gates. Of the four, three gates are in Gondia district and one—Gadegaon Depot—is in Bhandara.
The move comes amid rising demand for safaris following recent wildlife developments. To address low tiger numbers and prey base, the Forest Department translocated four tigers and 100 chitals from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.
Plans are also underway to bring 500 more herbivores from Pench Tiger Reserve to strengthen the ecosystem. With these steps, NNTR aims to balance conservation efforts with growing tourism interest.
