A 31-year-old man was allegedly duped in a shocking incident after befriending a woman on a dating app, highlighting a rising trend of such frauds in the city. The complaint was filed by Harshad Narendra Hatwar, a resident of Shahu Nagar, Manewada, at Sadar Police Station. The incident took place at a resto-bar in the Sadar area.
According to police, Harshad had recently downloaded the dating app Happn, where he matched with a woman named Tanu on Saturday morning. She claimed the pictures were of her sister and insisted they go to a resto-bar in Sadar. At the venue, the woman ordered expensive food and multiple rounds of whisky, leading to a bill of Rs 34,213. When Harshad objected, he was allegedly threatened by the staff, including the owner, manager and a bouncer.Fearing harm, he paid the amount via UPI.
During the incident, the woman left the place. Realising he had been cheated, Harshad later approached Sadar Police.Police have registered a case against the accused, including the woman, and have taken the bouncer into custody. Further investigation is underway.
Officials said similar scams have been reported in cities like Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai, and this appears to be the first such case in Nagpur.
