The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has dismissed a viral social media message claiming that temperatures would rise to 55°C between April 29 and May 12, calling it completely false and misleading. The message, allegedly issued by a group named “Nagari Sanrakshan Vibhag,” had spread widely and caused concern among residents.
Officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Nagpur, clarified that no such forecast has been issued. These types of rumours appear every summer and have no scientific basis. According to the IMD, there are currently no predictions suggesting temperatures will reach the extreme levels mentioned in the viral post.
Officials urged the public to trust only verified weather updates released through official IMD channels and avoid sharing unconfirmed social media messages. They also noted that no department called “Nagari Sanrakshan Vibhag” exists in the city, further proving the message was fake.
Authorities warned that such misinformation can spread panic, exaggerate fears about heat conditions, and trigger unnecessary reactions. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, verify information before believing it, and refrain from forwarding rumours.
