Nagpur is witnessing significant disruption as app-based cab drivers continue their strike, impacting pick-up and drop services at the airport. The protest, now entering its fourth day, has led to a blockade that drivers hope will draw attention from government officials and aggregators like Ola and Uber.
According to police sources, union leaders have been summoned regarding potential legal action if any complaints arise about vehicles being forcefully stopped. However, no formal complaints have been lodged yet. A senior police official stated, “The complaint has to come from other cabbies alleging that they are being forcefully stopped from entering the airport or accepting rides.” Passengers also have the option to file complaints.
The drivers are pushing for higher fare rates set by aggregators and want bike riders removed from the apps, arguing that these riders don’t follow RTO regulations and harm their business. During the protest, cab members requested fellow drivers to drop passengers near Pride Hotel instead of directly at the terminal. Deepak Sane of the Taxi Chalak Malak Kruti Samiti said that families with children are still allowed to proceed to the terminal.
A line of taxis has formed along the road opposite Pride Hotel as most drivers refrain from taking rides until further notice. This strategy leaves customers about a kilometer away from airport terminals without proper transport options. Many passengers are now resorting to pre-paid taxis or autorickshaws for travel.
Airport officials noted an increase in bus frequency by NMC to accommodate stranded travelers; buses now run every half hour in response to this ongoing situation.
