Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre has directed civic officials to immediately assess and strengthen infrastructure at all cremation Ghats across the city, stressing the need for improved facilities, security and encroachment-free access.
Chairing a review meeting at Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Memorial Standing Committee Hall on Sunday, the Mayor sought a detailed report on all 21 cremation grounds spread across 10 zones and instructed officials to submit a comprehensive status report within eight days.
The review focused on existing amenities, land availability, civic infrastructure and modernization plans, with a presentation made through a PPT on proposed strengthening and beautification works.
Mayor Thakre directed officials to study models from other cities while upgrading cremation grounds and emphasized construction of boundary walls, deployment of security guards and protection against anti-social activities. She also raised concern over encroachments affecting funeral processions in some locations and ordered immediate notices and action for their removal.
The Mayor sought detailed data on manpower, civic amenities and infrastructure available at each facility, while asking departments to take urgent steps to improve conditions. Present at the meeting were MLA Krishna Khopde, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Standing Committee Chair Shivani Dani Vakhare and senior civic officials.
During the meeting, MLA Khopde flagged encroachment issues at Wathoda cremation ground and lack of a security wall at Pardi cremation ground, urging immediate corrective measures. Civic authorities have now been asked to prioritize both infrastructure strengthening and protection of cremation ground land across Nagpur.
