Taking serious note of the extreme heatwave conditions in Vidarbha and its impact on students’ health, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to immediately install 600 air coolers in government hostels in Nagpur and make similar arrangements across hostels in the Vidarbha region. The decision has brought significant relief to thousands of girl students residing in these facilities.
Students in a large government hostel in Nagpur had been facing severe discomfort due to the intense summer heat, with no provision for coolers under existing rules. Despite repeated requests, authorities had earlier denied installation citing the absence of policy provisions. The worsening heat conditions reportedly led to health issues, including skin infections, among several students. As most residents are from outside the city and currently appearing for examinations, they had no option but to continue staying in the hostel under harsh conditions.
Following a formal representation highlighting the urgency of the situation, the Chief Minister’s Office took swift cognizance and instructed the concerned departments to act immediately. Considering the high temperatures in Vidarbha, relaxation in existing norms has been approved to ensure the installation of coolers without delay. Students have expressed relief and gratitude, stating that the prompt intervention has significantly improved their living conditions during the peak summer period.
