Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti has declared that May 1 will be observed as ‘Black Day’ in Nagpur and across various Vidarbha districts, renewing its campaign for a separate Vidarbha state on the same day Maharashtra celebrates its formation anniversary.
To press its demand, the organisation has planned a series of protests and symbolic demonstrations, alleging continued neglect of the Vidarbha region over the years. As part of the agitation, a black flag will be unfurled at Samvidhan Square at 7 am, where supporters wearing black bands will assemble in protest.
The demonstration in Nagpur will be accompanied by similar protests in districts such as Chandrapur and Rajura later in the day. According to VRAS leader Mukesh Masurkar, the movement is being carried out under the organisation’s broader “Mission 2027” initiative aimed at achieving separate statehood for Vidarbha through Article 3 of the Constitution.
The organisation highlighted issues such as irrigation backlog, farmer suicides, unemployment, malnutrition and industrial pollution, claiming that these concerns have remained unresolved for years. VRAS leaders further alleged that the state is facing severe financial strain, with liabilities surpassing revenue and pending contractor payments crossing Rs 96,000 crore.
