In an effort to provide relief to citizens from the scorching summer heat, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has started installing special mist sprinkler systems along with green nets at major traffic intersections across the city. The initiative aims to reduce heat stress for commuters and pedestrians during peak daytime temperatures.
Under the project, “Mist Systems” are being installed at 10 major city squares through CSR funding. Currently, the systems have been set up at Telephone Exchange Square and Chhapru Nagar Square, while installations are underway at Shankar Nagar Square, Samvidhan Square and GPO Square.
According to officials, the mist system sprays a fine layer of water on motorists waiting at traffic signals, creating a cooling effect and reducing the surrounding temperature by nearly five degrees Celsius. The setup includes high-pressure nozzles mounted around 15 feet above the ground on both sides of green-net-covered structures. Each system is connected to a 300-litre water tank, which is refilled three times a day to ensure continuous operation during hot weather conditions.
Civic officials said the combination of green shade nets and water mist helps reduce direct heat exposure and offers much-needed comfort to citizens travelling during extreme summer temperatures.
