Voter mapping ahead of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has hit a serious snag in Nagpur district, with over 17 lakh voters yet to be verified and the daily verification pace dropping to below half a per cent.
Of the district’s 46.42 lakh registered voters — up from 25.22 lakh in 2002 — only 28.45 lakh (61.28 per cent) have been verified so far, leaving 17.97 lakh pending. The pace, which was around one per cent per day, has now slipped to under 0.5 per cent, officials said.
The district has 4,610 Booth Level Officers (BLOs). Over 100 BLOs have been issued show-cause notices for evasion of duty, while the District Collector has proposed suspension of 16 BLOs.
The pressure is mounting as elections in five states have concluded and the SIR is expected to commence shortly. Pre-SIR verification must reach 100 per cent before the exercise begins, based on the 2002 voter list as the reference roll.
Nagpur district had earlier ranked fourth from the bottom among Maharashtra’s 36 districts in SIR preparedness. It has since improved marginally to 30th, officials said.
