The super-speciality building at Government Dental College and Hospital (GDCH), Nagpur, stands complete — but patients remain locked out with no clarity on when services will begin.
Administratively approved in 2018, construction of the six-storey, 2,052 sq metre building began in 2019 with an outlay of Rs 22.47 crore, taking five years to complete.
The hospital was slated to open on July 13, 2025 — the college’s foundation day — but essential equipment never arrived.
GDCH annually registers over 1.75 lakh patients, of whom roughly 25 per cent require super-speciality care. All such patients are currently turned away.
The first phase covers five departments — Digital Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry, Oral Implantology, Sports Dentistry and Forensic Odontology — with five permanent and 86 contractual posts sanctioned.
The District Planning Committee approved Rs 7 crore for equipment including 40 dental chairs, X-ray systems and CAD-CAM technology. Sources indicate even this fund falls short. Administration says tenders are complete and equipment is arriving, but has offered no launch date.
With the next foundation day on July 13 barely two months away, patients are hoping the doors will finally open.
