A Nagpur resident’s personal memory of meeting Veer Savarkar as a child has come to light at a Hindu Mahasabha event held in the city, offering a rare firsthand account of the freedom fighter.
Vinayak Damodav Puranic, a staunch Savarkar devotee and Hindu Mahasabha worker, recounted how the organisation’s programmes in Nagpur always began with a special tribute to Savarkar. As a child, whenever Savarkar visited Nagpur, Puranic’s father would take him to meet the leader — memories he has preserved for a lifetime.
Puranic recalled that at every such meeting, the young Puranic would touch Savarkar’s feet, receive his blessings and return home. He described Savarkar as a man who walked alongside the nation his entire life and now rests in a new generation’s hearts.
The reminiscence was shared at an event organised by Hindu Mahasabha at Dakshinamurti Mandir, Nagpur, where Mahamahopadhyay Balkashi Herdas also addressed the gathering. Senior party workers attended in large numbers.
A.B. Bhave, among those present, credited Puranic for keeping the memory of these personal Savarkar encounters alive.
