The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, but Nagpur will have to wait at least 10 to 12 more days before the season’s first rains arrive, according to the India Meteorological Department.
In the interim, IMD has issued a yellow alert for Vidarbha for the next two to three days, signalling pre-monsoon showers across the region. Chandrapur, Bhandara and Gondia districts are on orange alert, indicating heavier localised rainfall. Despite the cloudy and wet spell, residents should brace for intermittent sunshine and mild heat during the day.
With the Mrig Nakshatra beginning June 8 — traditionally associated with the onset of rains — forecasters say heavy rainfall during that period is unlikely this year given the delayed monsoon progression. The state government has advised farmers not to rush sowing operations.
On the seasonal outlook, IMD has forecast only around 90 per cent of normal rainfall for the year, citing the influence of El Niño conditions. The below-normal prediction raises concerns for agriculture and water storage across Vidarbha.
