Water supply to several parts of Nagpur is expected to be affected on Sunday after a borewell drilling machine damaged a crucial 1,200-mm-diameter raw water rising main connected to the Kanhan Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Juni Kamptee village.
According to officials, the Kanhan WTP is one of Nagpur’s primary sources of drinking water, drawing water from the Kanhan River for treatment and distribution across the city. The damaged pipeline plays a vital role in transporting raw water from the intake well-cum-jackwell on the riverbank to the treatment plant. The damage has resulted in substantial loss of raw water before it reaches the treatment facility, impacting the plant’s operational capacity. To carry out emergency repairs, OCW and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) have scheduled a shutdown from 10.30 pm on Sunday for approximately three hours.
As a result, morning water supply through all Kanhan-based Elevated Service Reservoirs (ESRs) will be partially affected.Residents in areas served by 42 ESRs under Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, Lakadganj and Nehru Nagar zones are likely to experience reduced water supply and low water pressure during the repair period.
Officials said the incident highlights the growing threat posed by unregulated drilling and excavation activities, which frequently damage critical public utility infrastructure and disrupt essential services. OCW and NMC have called for stricter regulations, including mandatory approvals for borewell drilling and excavation works and penal action against those responsible for damaging civic infrastructure.
Citizens in the affected areas have been advised to store adequate water in advance and use it judiciously until normal supply is restored. OCW and NMC have expressed regret for the inconvenience and sought public cooperation during the repair work.
