Twelve marriage lawns and event venues in Nagpur’s Civil Lines area are likely to face action for allegedly violating noise pollution norms after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) informed the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench about the status of compliance.
According to the civic body, notices had been issued to 12 lawn operators over excessive noise levels. However, several venue operators allegedly failed to fully comply with the conditions laid down in the notices, prompting the authorities to consider stricter action.The matter is being heard as part of a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning rising noise pollution in the city. Taking suo motu cognisance of the issue, the High Court has been closely monitoring compliance with noise regulations, particularly at event venues, marriage halls, and public functions.
During the hearing, the court reiterated that public health cannot be compromised and stressed the need for strict enforcement of noise pollution rules. The bench observed that excessive noise directly affects citizens’ health, peace, and quality of life.The court was informed that notices had been served to several institutions and organisers conducting events in the Civil Lines area. After hearing their submissions, the court granted them time to file detailed written responses.
The High Court also sought a response from the state government regarding measures being taken to regulate noise pollution at religious, social, and public events. In addition, it directed authorities to submit a report on the action taken against establishments found violating prescribed noise limits.The matter is expected to come up for further hearing after the authorities submit their compliance and enforcement reports.
