A major breakthrough has emerged in the shocking assault on the branch manager of Punjab National Bank’s Vardhman Nagar branch in Nagpur, with Nandanvan Police arresting the bank’s cashier on charges of attempted murder and destruction of evidence.
The accused, Swapnil Bhagat, was arrested following an extensive investigation into the attack on branch manager Rajesh Nikhare, who sustained serious injuries and remains under medical treatment.
Police said preliminary findings point to an internal dispute within the bank as the possible trigger for the violent incident. Investigators suspect that after allegedly attacking the manager, Bhagat left the branch, changed his clothes and later returned in an effort to avoid suspicion and create an appearance of normalcy.
During the probe, police also uncovered evidence suggesting that the accused attempted to dispose of the weapon used in the attack and erase traces that could link him to the crime. Several crucial leads gathered by investigators eventually led to his arrest.
The investigation has also brought other employees under scrutiny. Police are examining whether some staff members had prior knowledge of the incident or became aware of it soon after it occurred but failed to promptly alert police or senior bank authorities.
Bhagat is currently being questioned, and investigators are exploring all aspects of the case, including the motive behind the attack and the possibility of involvement by other individuals.
Police officials said the investigation is still underway and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. The incident has sent shockwaves through the banking community and sparked concerns over workplace conflicts escalating into serious acts of violence.
