A sharp rise in global crude oil prices and the suspension of several flight services have significantly increased air travel costs, putting an additional financial burden on passengers. Aviation industry officials say that higher operating expenses have left airlines with little option but to raise fares.According to aviation experts, jet fuel prices have nearly doubled over the past three months, directly impacting ticket rates across major domestic routes.
At the same time, the temporary suspension of several flight slots has reduced seat availability, especially on high-demand routes such as Delhi and Mumbai, further driving up fares. The increase in fares has been particularly noticeable for passengers travelling from Nagpur. Routes to major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Goa, and Indore have witnessed substantial price hikes.
Travel industry representatives say demand for air travel continues to rise, but airlines have not increased capacity proportionately, resulting in higher ticket prices. For example, weekend fares from Nagpur to Hyderabad and Indore—both within 500 km—have reportedly crossed ₹20,000 in some cases. Similarly, fares to metropolitan cities such as Delhi and Mumbai have become significantly more expensive compared to earlier months.
A Mumbai ticket that was previously available for around ₹6,000 can now cost close to ₹20,000 during peak travel periods.Industry observers also pointed to changes in flight schedules at Nagpur Airport. Revised operating timings and adjustments in connectivity on routes such as Nagpur–Kishangarh (Ajmer) and Nagpur–Nanded are expected to affect passenger planning and connecting flights.
Experts note that while the government recently reduced jet fuel prices from their peak levels, current rates remain nearly double those recorded earlier in the year. Unless fuel costs stabilize and flight capacity increases, passengers may continue to face elevated airfares in the coming months.
