Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has questioned the Maharashtra Public Service Commission’s decision to shift all Group A, B and C examinations to online mode, saying the decision should have been taken after discussion with students rather than unilaterally, raising the possibility of a reversal.
MPSC recently announced that the Maharashtra State Service Group A and B combined preliminary examination, the Group B non-gazetted combined preliminary examination and Group C exams would all be conducted online in two or more shifts per day. The decision has drawn widespread opposition from student organisations and elected representatives. MLA Rohit Pawar demanded that students be consulted and that the offline option be retained.
Critics argue that online exams disadvantage rural candidates who have less access to computer facilities, raise cybersecurity concerns, reduce transparency compared to paper-based tests, and require candidates to travel to city-based exam centres. Student organisations have pointed out that national-level competitive exams conducted online have also faced serious controversies.MPSC chairman has maintained that the online mode decision is final.
However, CM Fadnavis’s public statement that the decision should be taken after consulting students has raised the question of whether the commission will be asked to reconsider.
