In a major push to sports infrastructure in eastern Maharashtra, the state government has granted administrative approval for the establishment of an international-standard archery academy at the Sports Complex in Visapur village of Ballarpur taluka in Chandrapur district.
The academy is expected to provide aspiring archers from Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and other tribal-dominated regions with access to world-class training and coaching facilities closer to home.
The proposal was spearheaded by BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar, who had advocated for a dedicated archery academy to nurture local talent and enable young athletes to receive professional training without relocating to bigger cities.
According to a government resolution issued by the School Education and Sports Department, the academy will function under the Tribal Development Department, with priority admission for students from Scheduled Tribe communities.
Chandrapur and neighbouring Gadchiroli have earned recognition for producing several talented archers over the years. The new academy is expected to strengthen this legacy by offering international-standard infrastructure, scientific training methods and structured coaching programmes.
Mungantiwar thanked Tribal Development Minister and Chandrapur Guardian Minister Ashok Uike for extending support to the proposal, saying the academy would help tribal youth excel in archery at the national and international levels.
