The Maharashtra State Examination Council has taken a decisive step towards conducting the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (MAHATET) 2026 fully online, sending an official letter to the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) authorising it to conduct the examination. The letter, issued under the signature of Council Commissioner Mahesh Chothe, requests secure and speedy planning of the test in a transparent manner.
The exam was earlier scheduled for June 28, 2026, before being postponed by the Council. A total of 6,00,125 candidates had applied online across the state, including 2,58,061 for Paper 1 and 3,42,064 for Paper 2, with 1,729 examination centres finalised.
According to the letter, the Supreme Court, in a ruling on September 1, 2025, made passing the TET mandatory for in-service teachers, giving those who have not yet cleared it time until 2028. The Council now proposes to hold the examination at least twice a year, with all future editions conducted online. District-wise candidate data has been submitted to IBPS, and copies of the letter have been sent to the Principal Secretary of the School Education and Sports Department and the Education Commissioner.
