The Maharashtra government has resumed possession of 39 idle industrial plots in the Nagpur Division and opened them for fresh allotment, in an effort to unlock unused land and attract new industrial investment, Industries Minister Uday Samant informed the Legislative Council on Friday.
Responding to a starred question, Samant said the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has taken back nine plots in Hingna and 30 in Butibori after the allottees failed to set up industries. The reclaimed plots have been made available for prospective investors through MIDC’s Milaap portal. The minister was replying to a question raised by MLCs Abhijit Wanjari, Dr Parinay Fuke, Pravin Darekar and others.
He informed the House that 153 industrial units in the Hingna and Butibori industrial estates are currently non-operational, occupying nearly 270 acres of land. Across Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara and Gondia districts, as many as 301 allotted industrial plots remain under closed units due to financial distress, legal disputes and other operational issues.
Samant said MIDC has served notices to all such units, directing them to resume operations. If the units fail to restart production within the stipulated period, the corporation will reclaim the land in accordance with its land resumption policy.
Clarifying concerns over alleged unauthorised transactions involving industrial plots, the minister said MIDC does not permit the sale of allotted plots. Transfers and lease arrangements are allowed only after obtaining prior approval from the corporation and in compliance with its prescribed norms.
The issue assumes significance as legislators highlighted that large parcels of industrial land have remained locked in defunct units for years, reducing the availability of land for new entrepreneurs and slowing industrial growth and employment generation in the Nagpur region.
