The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued an Orange Alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–45 kmph in Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Amravati and Yavatmal districts on Saturday, signalling an active monsoon spell across Vidarbha.
A Yellow Alert has also been issued for Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Akola and Buldhana districts, where thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are expected.
The weather office has forecast continued monsoon activity next week, issuing a Yellow Alert for the entire Vidarbha region from Monday to Wednesday. A low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen the monsoon, bringing widespread rainfall across most districts, with heavy showers likely in some places on Monday.
The Meteorological Centre has advised residents to avoid stepping outdoors during thunderstorms unless absolutely necessary. People have also been urged not to take shelter under trees or temporary structures and to stay away from electric poles and other vulnerable installations because of the risk of lightning and strong winds.
The forecast rain is expected to improve the rainfall situation in Vidarbha, which recorded below-normal precipitation in June. Gadchiroli and Gondia witnessed the highest rainfall deficit of nearly 85 per cent, while Amravati recorded the lowest deficit at around 23 per cent.
Other districts reported rainfall shortages ranging from 23 to 85 per cent. Meteorologists expect the active monsoon conditions in July to significantly reduce the rainfall deficit across the region.
