“Find a middle way out and you can save half” Kaustav Chatterjee

A conference on Role of NGO’s in Environmental Protection had been organised at Institute of Engineers to mark the World Environment Day. This conference took place recently in the premises of the institute where Founder of Green Vigil Foundation, Kaustav Chatterjee was invited as the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker for the evening.

“Find a middle way out and you can save half of what is about to lose”, said Chatterjee indicating towards the techniques he has been using while working as a social activist.

Chatterjee further said that the old school activist used to stand and protest or even scream his throat out until either his demands are attended or the whole agitation is overtaken by the higher authorities to finally do what was being opposed. The officers on the other hand, blindly carry out the tasks of chopping down hundreds of trees or acres of forest area. But if we put them on a middle ground, where the NGO’s bring out an ideal moderate position between the two extremes or let’s just say for one word, a Golden Mean and explain them the situation in a matured way, the officers might agree with you and work together cordially. Such attempts from our side have been a helping hand to both the nature and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials. You need to have a strong point and a pure & supreme vision to convince the government officers as well as the people around you, added Chatterjee. It helped us save

Similarly on Earth day as people around the globe switch off the lights to save few units of energy, we calling ourselves as the citizens of Nagpur do this same activity on each poornima (full moon), every month to conserve the energy.  The Poornima Campaign was initiated under the guidance of former mayor of Nagpur, Anil Sole since Januray 2014. The NMC selects a square on each poornima and dims the street light and at the same time the members NGO interact with the residents and shopkeepers around the square on the issues like carbon footprints, necessity of conserving the energy & energy crisis and many other related topics. This campaign was able to save 159141 units of electricity, 1193557 liters of water, 79570 Kgs of coal, 159141 Kgs of carbon emission.

Dr. Ramesh Daryapurkar, Convener, Environment Division, S.S Doifode, President of Sinchan Sahayog and U.P Wankhede, President of Sinchan Sahayog were invited for the conference along with other dignitaries.
