Disaster village project to see light of the day soon

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will be setting up first disaster village in the country to train the personnel of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), central and state forces and units from foreign countries.

Recently a team of NDMA visited the proposed site at Surabardi village. The disaster village would be set up on 145 acres of land in three phases.

Officials of the firm which has been awarded the contract for the construction of disaster village along with a team of architects too visited the project site. After inspecting the land, architects and engineers gave a presentation on the proposed project to be set up on 145 acres of land.

Sources said, the officials of the National Disaster Management Academy, has suggested some changes in the design and layout.

The land acquisition process has been completed. Officials said the land required for setting up disaster village has been acquired as per the norms. Some changes in the layout of the disaster village have been suggested to the engineers and architects of the construction firm. After making these changes they would give another presentation before the authorities concerned. For this, they would visit the proposed site again after two weeks.

If there was no necessary changes in the plan , it would be approved by the concerned authorities and handed over to the Nagpur Metro Region Development Authority (NMRDA).

The disaster village is a part of the world class disaster management institute which is taking shape in the city. In three phases a village would be constructed which would have various structures and would be equipped to conduct live simulation exercises for a wide range of natural and man-made disasters. Disaster response requires a different kind of training infrastructure. After completion, the institute will become the main training centre for NDRF and state disaster response forces.

The village would have collapsed structures, over bridge, tunnel, etc along with a flooded village, helicopter and even a train. There will be special focus on search and rescue at collapsed structures and response to chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear disasters.
