Proud moment, Wardha’s Vaishali Hiwase becomes BRO’s first woman CO

A proud moment for Vidarbha region as Border Road Organisation (BRO) has appointed Vaishali Sureshchandra Hiwase from Wardha as the first woman Commanding Officer (CO) of a Road Construction Company (RCC) responsible for providing forward connectivity along the India-China border.

Vaishali Hiwase, Executive Engineer (Civil) in BRO, also served in Kargil for years.

“With two air-maintained detachments located at 10,000 ft and above, the alignment of road is going through some formidable passes and treacherous terrain of hard rock with vertical cliffs,” stated a press release issued by BRO, while giving the description of the work ahead for the woman officer.

Vaishali Hiwase completed her M.Tech. from Wardha. After successfully completing a demanding tenure in Kargil, the woman officer has taken over the command to undertake this challenge of cutting through the rocks.

Last year, BRO constructed key roads and tunnels in forward areas along the China border amidst COVID-19 pandemic and the border standoff between India and China in Ladakh sector. BRO is building strategic roads in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. It plans to complete all 61 strategic roads assigned to it along the China border by December 2022 to allow swifter mobilisation of troops and stores to forward areas.

This humble beginning by BRO will usher in a new era of women empowerment that will see women officers taking over most arduous tasks, stated the BRO press release. “#History in making,” tweeted BRO.
