The arrival of Goddess Gauri (Mahalaxmi) in homes is said to bring health, wealth, happiness and prosperity.
Two idols of Goddess Gauri are brought home and worshipped and the arrival is regarded as the coming of the Dughters by some communities.
Jyeshta Gauri Pujan is performed in many households during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Maharashtra. In 2023, Gauri Avahan in on September 21. Gauri Puja is on September 22 and Gouri Visarjan is on September 23, 2023.
Nagpurians also celebrate the day with great enthusiasm and make sure that they complete all the rituals properly so that Goddess Gauri becomes happy.
The popular belief is that Goddess Gauri visits and resides in the home during the period. Therefore the houses are kept clean and new decorations are added to welcome the Goddess. Special Maharashtrian food including puran poli is also prepared during the period.
